The Evolution of the Loafer

Loafers, slip ons, drivers. Whatever you may refer to them in where ever you live, they are the loves of my life and countless other Loafer lovers around the world. I wear them to work , school, and to go out. Alot of people don't know the history beyond Loafers. Interestingly enough Loafers appeared in the mid 1930 from Norway. They began as casual shoes and have since evolved to lace ups and being worn in a variety of colors and designs, often with tassles on the front or with metal decorations.

The Spaulding family from New Hampshire who began making them based on Norwegin designs were the first to coin the term Loafer. In 1966, it was Italien designer Gucci who first put metal straps across the front in the shape of a horse bit. The Loafer is highly popular in Italy and among the upper classes in America today.

Though originally mens shoes, some styles of loafers, such as casual tassle loafers, maybe worn by women.
